Malas, Matcha, and Mantras

New Year. New Moon. New Intentions.

Whether you want to wear your mala as an accessory, a tool for meditation, a physical representation of your intentions in life, or maybe all the above, there’s no time like the present to get started on crafting your vision into reality. Make one for yourself or as a gift for a friend or family member. Better yet, bring them with you to craft together! Pittsburgh’s own Ultra Matcha will be there to supply our green tea matcha goodness to keep our spirits up and our focus aligned.

This workshop includes an intro to mala making, followed by hands on crafting time & matcha tea sipping, ending with a group mantra meditation with your new mala. All in the comfort of Vital Glow Yoga studio surrounded by blankets, cushions, creativity, and friends old & new.

We will be providing knotting tools & silk bead thread, as well as some lava beads if you’d like to add aromatherapy benefits to your mala. You will need to bring 108 beads of the same size, any additional mala décor such as tassels or charms, along with love & positive energy to weave into the knotting & assembling process.

Here’s some guidance on obtaining your beads:
- LOCAL: There’s a couple sources in town for beads if seeing and touching is important in your creative process. (1) The Crystal Bead Bazaar in Lawrenceville (4521 Butler St.) and (2) Crystal River Gems downtown (120 Fifth Ave.)

- ONLINE: (1) The most recommended online source – they offer just about any stone you can think of and in all potential sizes for mala making (6mm, 8mm, or 10mm). They are sold in 16in strands. For 6mm that’s about 67 beads per strand, 8mm- 51 beads, 10mm- 41 beads. I personally suggest the happy medium of 8mm beads for mala making, although going with 6mm would save you some money since you would only need 2 strands. (2) is a supplier that works directly with Fire Mountain Gems and allows you to place an order through them for the cheapest wholesale cost that you would only be able to get from Fire Mountain if you ordered a ton of strands. They are a safe and recommended source.

- BEADS: You will need 108 beads, 6mm or 8mm (all the same size) ~ 3 of these can be a prettier gemstone to be used as marker beads OR you can obtain 105 beads and we will be providing 3 8mm lava beads as your maker beads, which can be infused with essential oils. (A beautiful site touching upon stones and their meanings: You also have the option to make a smaller necklace or bracelet by using 54 or 27 beads.

- MERU bead - These are larger beads that look like the pendant with the tassle hanging off of it ~ this is the bead that will build up with energy you put into the mala - for example, in the past I’ve used the traditional rudraksha bead. Or if you’re like me and have collected random beads over the years, this is a good spot for adding one with some sentimental value.

(A nice source touching on the different ways to use your mala: )

A mala you make is more unique than any you can buy pre-made and will be more precious, putting your positive energy into the process. Also, it will be considerably a cheaper, more fun option to join us and be amongst friends!!
